As I reflected on the last 10 years I saw dramatic change in many areas of my life. For starters in 2000 I was a young 20 year old with no real direction in my life, I was working as a concert promoter, I was living with my parents and all I could think about was the next party. Life was grand! Or so I thought. In the course of the last 10 years though, I met my wife, delivered 2 handsome boys, bought a house, and finally found some direction.

In 2000 I saw myself as a person who would get a job, work there for many many years, move up the ladder and earn the big bucks. hah. That was the worst perception I probably could have ever imagined. Along with all of the amazing things that happened in my life like meeting my wife and having kids, I also met a friend who would later become much more than just a friend. Now before you get any weird thoughts I'll explain.

In late 2001, I was a concert promoter working on the Snoop Dogg Puff Puff Pass tour in the Midwest. At one particular show here in Kansas City I met a young tour manager named Jay Kubassek. He was probably the only other guy in his early 20's working on the tour so we struck up some conversation and became friends. Well as the cards would have it Jay ended up moving to my hometown after meeting one of our production assistants Megan. Long story short over the years Jay and I would become great friends. Little did I know at the time but jay would change the direction of my life forever. You see jay is different than most people on earth. When most people fail at something they usually accept it and move on, not jay, he knew he was destined for something bigger and was going to MAKE IT HAPPEN. After failing at so many home based businesses, he finally struck gold. He became an internet marketer and within 10 months was making well over 100k PER MONTH!

You see jay was never limited by some preconceived notion that he was only worth so much or that he could only earn so much. Hell, he didn't even have a high school diploma yet wouldn't get out of bed for less than 50k per month.

Coming from a family that valued higher education and thought that you could never build wealth without being a doctor or a lawyer, jays philosophy of "I can do anything" crushed everything I had ever known.

Since then I have cemented into my life the philosophy that I too can do anything. I can earn what I want, when I want or where I want. In the last 10 years I have seen dramatic changes in my life that in early 2000's I would have deemed unrealistic.

Nothing is unrealistic now.

Going forward I now see myself as a leader who can help others break through their limiting beliefs and accomplish things they never thought were possible. It's like a sense of duty I have to give back as I was given so much. Today jay and I are not just friends, he's my brother and I owe him more than I can write about in the blog post. Looking forward to 2020 and beyond is now a very exciting prospect for my family.

So I ask again, where do you see yourself in 2010 and beyond?

Something Bigger Than Myself

After living in the Kansas City area for over 15 years I was fortunate to hear a story of a man here in KC who would change my life forever. He is a man I have never met and will never get the chance to meet as his life was tragically taken by cancer in early 2007, his name was Larry Stewart. Larry was a man who met thousands of people and literally changed the lives of each and every one of them, but until shortly before his death only few of the people he helped ever knew his name.

You see Larry was a man of great secrecy as his goal was not personal recognition for his actions, but his goal was very simple, to do what he could for others. As a young child Larry was raised by his elderly grandparents who barely scraped by on $33 per month and some additional welfare benefits forcing his family to use an outhouse and heat water on stoves for bathes. In his early twenties Larry had another string of unfortunate events leading to his sleeping in a car for weeks and going 2 days without eating. But in 1971 Larry’s life would be changed forever by one stranger’s act of kindness.

While eating breakfast at the Dixie Diner in Houston Mississippi, Larry acted as if he had forgotten his wallet when the bill came. The owner of the diner came over to him recognizing his situation and simply said “you must have dropped this” and preceded to hand Larry a $20 bill. Larry paid for his breakfast and then pushed his car to the nearest gas station as he was out of gas. That one simple act of kindness changed his life forever and Larry at that moment made a promise to himself that if he was ever in a position to help others he would do it. After the diner incident Larry had a series of ups and downs over the next 10 years going from job to job, starting a business that failed and even getting laid off right before Christmas 2 years in a row. He felt as if he was a failure in so many ways that at one point he almost robbed a store to get his family through the holidays.

One day after being fired, right before Christmas, Larry found himself at a Drive in Restaurant. “It was cold and this car hop didn't have on a very big jacket, and I thought to myself, `I think I got it bad. She's out there in this cold making nickels and dimes.' He gave her $20 and told her to keep the change. And suddenly I saw her lips begin to tremble and tears begin to flow down her cheeks. She said, `Sir, you have no idea what this means to me.” Later that night, Larry remembered his promise from years before. With $600 in the bank, he withdrew $200 and began driving around looking for people who needed help. He started handing out $5 and $10 bills all around town. And that action was the catalyst for Larry Stewart to become the Kansas City Secret Santa.

Over the years Larry would continue to give out money to people but he would do so without revealing his identity. Dressed as Santa Claus, Larry would hand out money to people he would encounter who appeared to be in financial distress. Over the years his luck changed and he became a financial success by building a company that earned him over $5 Million Dollars. He would never forget how his life was changed by random acts of kindness and over the years he estimates he gave out over $1.3 Million dollars in cash to people in need.

Larry’s life is proof that small acts of kindness, done without a desire for recognition can change people’s lives forever, even his own. When times are tough and life seems to be working against me, I stop and think about how great I really have it and remember that there are millions of people around the world and even next door, who have nothing. Literally nothing.

Unfortunately for the world Larry is gone, but his story continues to inspire us and hopefully we can all stop thinking about our problems for a few minutes every day and remember just how great we really have it. I firmly believe that Larry’s philosophy can be boiled down to a single sentence, so I’ll leave you with this, as my good friend John always says “do something today, for someone, in the knowing that there is no way they can ever possibly repay you, and watch the world change.”

It's Been awhile since my last post but that will change.
